The Grape
Zinfandel is California's 'heritage' grape, long thought unique to the state until DNA profiling in 2001 revealed it as the Croatian tribidrag (and Italy's Primitivo). It is the signature of Dry Creek Valley, where Italian immigrants planted it in the late 19th century; century-old 'old vine' blocks survive and produce concentrated, spicy wines.
