History

The Laurelwood District became an AVA in 2021, a nested AVA within the Chehalem Mountains named for the distinctive Laurelwood loess soil that covers its high volcanic ridges. The AVA captures the highest, most exposed portion of the Chehalem Mountains, where wind-deposited loess sits atop basalt. The combination produces Pinot Noir of concentrated fruit, bright acidity, and a fine, almost chalky minerality distinct from the surrounding AVAs ^[1].
