History

The Yamhill-Carlton District was established as an AVA in 2005, centered on the towns of Yamhill and Carlton in the northern Willamette. Its distinctive soils — marine sedimentary sandstone weathered from an ancient seabed — produce Pinot Noir of a darker, more robust character than the volcanic Dundee Hills. The AVA's protected, relatively warm position allows reliable ripening, and its wines are known for dark berry fruit, firm structure, and an earthy, almost savory depth ^[1].
