The McMinnville AVA was established in 2005, covering the hills southwest of the city of McMinnville. Sheltered from Pacific rain by the Coast Range, the region sits in a modest rain shadow that produces a distinct microclimate, while cool air draining from the mountains preserves acidity. Soils here are predominantly marine sedimentary with basalt intrusions. The Pinot Noir is typically dark-fruited, structured, and earthy — a more savory register than the brighter Dundee Hills to the east [1].
