History

Chiles Valley was recognized as an AVA in 1999, encompassing a narrow, elevated valley running east from the town of Napa. Named for Joseph Chiles, a 19th-century settler, the valley's higher elevation and east-west orientation create a cooler, later-ripening climate than the valley floor. Zinfandel vines dating to the 1880s survive here, and the AVA is prized for Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon of restrained alcohol, bright acidity, and structured character ^[1].
