History

Atlas Peak was designated an AVA in 1992, capturing the high volcanic plateau east of the valley floor. At elevation, the district sits above the marine fog, gaining direct sun but with cool mountain air that preserves acidity. Originally developed as a resort and vineyard estate in the late 19th century, Atlas Peak's basaltic soils and cool climate yield Cabernet Sauvignon and, notably, Sangiovese and other Italian varieties of bright acidity and structured tannin ^[1].
