History
David Lett planted the valley's first Pinot Noir in 1965, earning the nickname 'Papa Pinot' [1]. The AVA was recognized in 1984 [2]. Willamette's reputation was built on Pinot Noir that rivaled Burgundy, confirmed in blind tastings through the 1980s–90s. The valley now holds seven nested sub-AVAs reflecting distinct soils.
